Burkina Faso recalls diplomats after breaking ties with France
Burkina Faso formally ended diplomatic relations with France on 26 June 2026, ordering the closure of its embassy and consulate in Paris. Twelve Burkinabe diplomats and consular staff returned to Ouagadougou, where they were received by Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré and Deputy Minister Stella Eldine Kabré. Former chargé d’affaires Jean Marie Bakouan handed over the national flag and the embassy keys, symbolising the final shutdown.
The team denied rumors of seeking asylum in France and affirmed they returned “with pride”. The foreign ministry said arrangements are underway to address the cases of Burkinabe residents in France, including the issuance of pending passports, in coordination with the High Council of Burkinabe Abroad.
