Burkina Faso reforms community service laws to reduce prison overcrowding

The Legislative Assembly of the People (ALP) in Burkina Faso has unanimously adopted a revision of the law regarding community service (TIG). The reform aims to improve social reintegration and alleviate prison overcrowding by providing new alternatives to incarceration.

Key provisions of the new law include the ability to mandate community service automatically for certain minor offenses, provided the victim's rights have been restored. The legislation also expands eligible activities to include intellectual services and establishes a permanent regime for commuting prison sentences to community service.

However, the law excludes crimes and terrorism-related offenses from these alternatives, except in cases of sentence commutation after at least one-third of the original prison term has been served. The reform also clarifies the responsibilities of judges, prison administration, and host organizations to ensure better monitoring of those sentenced.
