Burkina Faso reports 1.3 million IDPs return as security gains reach 74.5 %

By 30 June 2026, more than 1.31 million internally displaced Burkinabè have returned to 1 034 localities, up from 1.16 million in 871 localities at the end of 2025. The government, led by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, linked the return to a broader security and development strategy. National forces report that control of the country’s territory has risen to 74.53 % from 73.56 % in December 2025, reflecting a concerted reconquest effort against former terrorist‑held areas.

The return programme is supported by reconstruction measures, including the strengthening of the National Emergency and Rehabilitation Council (CONASUR), acquisition of 68 displacement camps, the national DEME SIRA campaign, and the launch of a digital platform for mobile social services. The government also highlighted progress in agriculture, health, education, internal revenue mobilisation and the building of key infrastructure, aiming to restore administration, basic services and economic activity to reclaimed zones.
