Burkina Faso reports rise in road fatalities for July 2026

In Burkina Faso, the Ministry of Security reported a concerning trend in road fatalities for July 2026. While the total number of accidents decreased by 4.49% and injuries dropped by 5.07% compared to June, the number of deaths rose by 24.18%, increasing from 91 to 113.

National roads accounted for a significant portion of these incidents. High accident rates were noted between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM, as well as during nighttime hours. Collisions between motorcycles and vehicles were particularly lethal, resulting in 56 deaths. Primary causes identified include inattention (29%), recklessness (19%), and speeding (15%). Additionally, 88% of motorcyclists involved in accidents were not wearing helmets.

Preliminary data from the first half of August suggests a potential decline in accidents and victims following the implementation of video-based fine issuance (vidéoverbalisation).
