Burkina Faso Restores Kokologho Dam and Plans Controlled Release from Bagre Dam

Burkina Faso has completed a three‑month rehabilitation of the Kokologho Dam in Boulkiemdé Province, raising its storage capacity to over 806,000 cubic metres. Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo inaugurated the dam on 1 August, noting that the restored reservoir will support a 25‑hectare irrigated scheme for rice, maize, vegetables, aquaculture and fish farming, creating jobs for youth and women and strengthening national food security.

Separately, the Water Resources Commission warned that the Bagre Dam, also in Burkina Faso, may begin a controlled water spillage from 11 August 2026 if its level reaches 234 metres. The dam is currently 62.77 % full. The release could affect downstream communities along the White Volta River in northern Ghana, and residents have been urged to follow safety instructions from local authorities.
