Burkina Faso suspends beauty pageants for women's science competition
Burkina Faso has suspended all national beauty pageants, replacing them with a focus on intellectual achievement through the launch of HAKILI Mousso, a national science competition for women. The competition featured 84 contestants competing in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, with top performers receiving prizes and scholarships.
President Ibrahim Traoré congratulated the winners, encouraging them to believe in their own capabilities. The initiative aims to promote female participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The decision has sparked significant debate on social media. Supporters view the move as a meaningful step toward true empowerment by prioritizing intellect over physical appearance. Conversely, critics argue that the suspension of beauty pageants is unnecessary and that women should maintain the freedom to choose between pursuing scientific careers and participating in beauty competitions.
