Burkina Faso suspends exports of millet, maize, and sorghum flours

The government of Burkina Faso has suspended the export of millet, maize, and sorghum flours, as well as their derivatives, effective immediately and until further notice. The decision, announced by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts, Serge Gnaniodem Poda, on October 9, 2026, also halts the issuance of Special Export Authorizations (ASE) for these products.

This regulatory shift comes less than three months after the lifting of a previous ban that had been in place since February 2022. The primary objective of the new measure is to prioritize the domestic market, ensuring the regular availability of these essential food items and maintaining affordable prices for local consumers. By restricting exports, the government aims to protect the national cereal market and prevent potential shortages or price volatility.
