WHO African Regional Committee meets in Addis Ababa to set health priorities
Health leaders and ministers from 47 WHO African Member States are convening in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa. The meeting focuses on defining regional health priorities, strengthening health systems, and addressing challenges such as resource constraints and emerging health emergencies.
In Guinea-Bissau, the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) has handed over laboratory equipment worth over 1.5 million euros to strengthen epidemiological services. Additionally, Guinea-Bissau has become the first ECOWAS nation to host an engagement mission for the new Regional Community Health Policy, with the Gabú and Oio regions designated as pilot zones.
In Chad, the government has reactivated the ‘Meeting of the 24’ to improve health governance, aiming to increase national vaccination coverage to 90% by 2029. Meanwhile, Burkina Faso is preparing to host the 14th National Week of Traditional and Alternative Medicine in Manga to promote the integration of traditional practices into the national health system.
Economic discussions at the summit highlighted a critical financing gap. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) reported that African governments fund less than 41% of total health expenditure on average, often spending more on debt servicing than on public health.
