Kelowna RCMP warns of rising sextortion and online blackmail

The Kelowna RCMP has issued a warning regarding a rise in sextortion cases, a form of online blackmail where offenders threaten to release intimate images or videos unless demands for money or further content are met.

According to the RCMP, these incidents are increasingly involving youth across Canada. Offenders often establish relationships with victims through social media, messaging applications, or gaming platforms. The police noted that increased screen time during school breaks can elevate risks for young people.

The RCMP is advising parents and caregivers to strengthen social media privacy settings, maintain open conversations about online safety, and remain aware that once intimate content is shared, its distribution may be impossible to control.
