Burning Man festival begins in Nevada amid declining Gen Z attendance

The annual Burning Man festival has commenced in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, with approximately 70,000 attendees expected to gather in the temporary metropolis of Black Rock City. Participants have begun setting up camps, shade structures, and large-scale art installations, including a metal octopus and a shattered Eiffel Tower. Key ceremonial structures, such as the Man and the Temple of the Moon, are prepared for their traditional burnings at the end of the event.

Despite the festival's scale, demographic data indicates a significant shift in its attendee base. A recent census survey shows that the proportion of participants in their 20s has dropped to a record low of 10% in 2025, down from over 30% in 2015.

Researchers attribute this decline among Gen Z attendees to rising costs and logistical challenges. More than a quarter of respondents cited the cost of attendance as their primary obstacle. The Burning Man Project has faced financial difficulties, reporting a loss of $265 per main ticket sold in 2024. Consequently, ticket prices have risen significantly from $390 in 2015 to $550 in 2026, with additional costs for vehicle passes and supplies.
