Burnout syndrome and signs of workplace stress

Occupational burnout, also known as burnout syndrome, is a chronic response to workplace stress that can impact both emotional and physical well-being. According to research published in The Journal of International Medical Research, key characteristics include physical fatigue and cognitive exhaustion. Common symptoms involve generalized mental and physical depletion, difficulty concentrating, memory issues, and a loss of motivation. Other indicators include depersonalization, cynicism, increased irritability with colleagues or clients, and a noticeable decline in productivity.

Career coach Ana Lorente, founder of Muy Ciela, suggests distinguishing between temporary periods of low motivation and more serious ‘red code’ signals that indicate a need for a career change. She notes that while motivation naturally fluctuates, persistent patterns—such as recurring anxiety on Sunday nights or a malaise that affects one's entire life—should be closely monitored to determine if a professional transition is necessary.
