Burriana implements DNA genetic census for dogs
The municipality of Burriana has reached a significant milestone in its DNA-based genetic census for dogs, with 1,392 animals registered as of August 12. This initiative covers between 41% and 47% of the city's estimated canine population of 3,500 to 4,000 animals.
Registration rates have accelerated significantly over the summer, rising from 320 registrations in June to 878 in July. Local veterinary clinics have played a crucial role, facilitating over 84% of the total applications. The program aims to protect pets from loss or theft and to improve urban cleanliness by monitoring pet waste.
Currently, the genetic test is free for owners who book an appointment. However, starting October 1, the test will become mandatory with a cost of 37.85 euros. Following the campaign, local police will enforce documentation requirements in public spaces. Failure to comply with the genetic census, or other infractions such as failing to leash animals or clean up excrement, can result in fines ranging from 500 to 3,000 euros.
