Guardia Civil dismantles million-euro cyber-fraud network

The Guardia Civil has dismantled a large-scale cyber-fraud network through Operation Ibermellow. The criminal organization operated via a call center, using smishing and vishing techniques to impersonate bank employees. By sending fake SMS messages alerting victims to suspicious charges, the group coerced individuals into calling a fraudulent number, where they were manipulated into transferring funds or taking out personal loans.

The operation spanned 24 provinces and resulted in the arrest of 29 individuals, with 57 others currently under investigation. The fraud targeted 43 victims, primarily located in the Spanish provinces of Huesca, Zaragoza, and Teruel, resulting in losses exceeding one million euros. Authorities have successfully recovered more than 250,000 euros of the stolen funds.
