Burrolandia sanctuary protects abandoned donkeys in Mexico
Germán Flores and his family operate Burrolandia, a sanctuary in Otumba, Mexico, dedicated to protecting and caring for abandoned and mistreated donkeys. Founded in 2006, the initiative was a response to the failure of local authorities to address a significant decline in the donkey population, which decreased by approximately 60% between 1994 and 2010.
The sanctuary currently provides dignified living conditions for about 100 rescued animals. While donkeys are a central part of the cultural identity in Otumba—home to the annual National Donkey Fair—the species faces ongoing threats. Mechanization has replaced many traditional roles for donkeys in agriculture and construction, leading to widespread abandonment and neglect.
Although donkeys were originally introduced to Mexico from Africa by Spanish colonizers, they have become deeply integrated into the country's social and economic history. Despite their cultural importance, the animals often face exploitation during public celebrations and are frequently discarded once they are no longer useful for labor.
