Legal actions taken against influencer Semih Varol and Konya chamber employees

Two separate legal incidents have drawn attention in Turkey. In Istanbul, social media influencer Semih Varol was detained following a TikTok live stream in which he allegedly used insulting language toward police officers. Varol faces charges of “insulting a public official due to their duty” under the Turkish Penal Code. Authorities also issued him a traffic fine of 1,246 TL for behavior that endangers pedestrians.

In Konya, two employees of the Karapınar Drivers and Automobile Tradesmen Chamber, identified as Şenay İnci K. and Cihat K., were sentenced to five months in prison and 2 months and 15 days of deprivation of rights for “misconduct in office.” The court found that the individuals collected unauthorized “service fees” or “donations” of 150 TL from citizens during license plate replacement processes. While the court suspended the announcement of the verdict, the victim's legal counsel has expressed intent to appeal, seeking a harsher sentence.
