Turkey municipalities implement transport fare hikes and speed limit changes
Various municipalities in Turkey are implementing changes to transportation regulations and costs. In Trabzon, the Metropolitan Municipality Council approved a 25 percent increase in public transport fares. This raises the minimum distance fare for minibuses from 32 to 40 lira and municipal bus fares from 27 to 35 lira. While Mayor Ahmet Metin Genç cited rising fuel costs, YENİ Party Group Deputy Chairman Cüneyit Zorlu argued that the increase places a heavy burden on low-income citizens and retirees, noting that fuel prices have risen significantly more than minimum wage adjustments.
In Diyarbakır, the Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME) has updated speed limits on several major roads to improve traffic flow and safety. Speed limits on the Elazığ-Şanlıurfa Boulevard and Airport Road have been increased to 82 km/h for cars, minibuses, and vans, while motorcycles and heavy vehicles face different limits. Conversely, speed limits on several other key streets, such as Fırat and Mezopotamya, have been set at 65 km/h for passenger vehicles.
In Edirne, taxi drivers have expressed dissatisfaction with a 15 percent increase in meter tariffs, calling the adjustment insufficient to cover rising operational and fuel expenses. The Edirne Drivers and Automobile Tradesmen Chamber is seeking further discussions with the local mayor to address these demands.
