Bursa City Hospital expands sleep laboratory capacity
Bursa City Hospital has expanded its sleep laboratory capacity by adding two new rooms to meet increasing patient demand. This expansion was coordinated by the Ministry of Health and supported by the Bursa Provincial Health Directorate, aiming to provide faster appointments and monitoring for patients.
Medical experts, including Chest Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Koç, highlighted the risks of sleep apnea, which is characterized by breathing pauses or significant slowing during sleep. Symptoms such as snoring, breathing interruptions, and daytime drowsiness can lead to serious health complications if untreated, including heart attacks, strokes, and paralysis. Additionally, excessive daytime sleepiness poses a significant risk for drivers, potentially leading to traffic accidents.
The gold standard for diagnosing sleep apnea is polysomnography, a non-invasive procedure where patients are monitored overnight in a laboratory using electrodes to evaluate breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and other sleep metrics. Patients are advised to maintain their regular sleep routines and avoid caffeine, heavy meals, or intense exercise before the procedure.
