Bursa murder suspect sees 15-fold social media follower increase

In Karacabey, Bursa, 18-year-old Gökçe Alkan was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, 24-year-old Mustafa B., following a dispute in a forested area. Mustafa B. has been arrested on charges of intentional homicide.

Following the incident, Mustafa B.’s social media presence saw a massive surge, with his follower count increasing approximately 15-fold. This has sparked intense public outcry due to comments from users who stated they were following the suspect because he was “handsome” or had a “good look.”

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan addressed the phenomenon, describing it as a form of “moral desensitization” and mentioning “hybristophilia”—a psychological attraction to criminals. The victim's family has called for transparency and justice, stating, “Our demand is not revenge, but justice.”
