Bursa wedding banquet causes mass illness in Orhaneli

Hundreds of people fell ill after consuming chicken and rice served at a circumcision wedding ceremony in the Orhaneli district of Bursa, Turkey. Reports indicate that out of approximately 500 guests, the number of affected individuals reached as high as 367, with many seeking medical attention for symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

The Bursa Provincial Health Directorate confirmed that many guests were treated at Orhaneli State Hospital and other local medical facilities. While many patients were discharged after receiving treatment, 23 individuals remained under observation, though officials stated their conditions were stable.

Authorities have launched both judicial and administrative investigations into the incident. Food and water samples have been collected for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of the illness. In response to the event, the President of the Bursa Veterinary Chamber highlighted the critical importance of food safety and the cold chain, particularly when handling poultry, to prevent bacterial growth such as Salmonella or Campylobacter.
