Ali Osman Sönmez State Hospital opens in Bursa

The Ali Osman Sönmez State Hospital has officially begun accepting patients in Bursa, Turkey, marking a significant expansion of the city's healthcare infrastructure. The new facility features a capacity of approximately 1,315 beds, 232 intensive care beds, and 32 operating rooms. It is designed to serve as a major medical hub, housing the services of several existing institutions.

The hospital is currently integrating services from the Çekirge State Hospital, which has served the region for over 55 years. Future plans include the phased relocation of certain units from the Dörtçelik Children's Hospital and the İlker Çelikcan Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center. While the facility is now functionally operational, a formal opening ceremony is expected to be scheduled by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Local officials, including AK Party Bursa Provincial Chairman Davut Gürkan, noted that the hospital's large emergency department will significantly alleviate the city's medical workload. However, the relocation of the İlker Çelikcan Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Center has drawn local criticism, as residents expressed concerns regarding the reduction of its bed capacity from 150 to 60 beds within the new complex.
