Bursa Technical University develops eco-friendly automotive materials

Bursa Technical University (BTÜ) and EPSAN Plastik have launched a collaborative project to develop next-generation eco-friendly materials for the automotive industry. Supported by the TÜBİTAK TEYDEB 1505 University-Industry Cooperation Support Program, the initiative focuses on creating bio-based polyamide foam composites using plant-derived raw materials.

These new materials are designed to replace existing plastics in vehicle interior trim components, such as door panels and consoles. The primary objectives are to reduce vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions, while also minimizing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and odors to improve cabin air quality.

Led by Associate Professor Meral Akkoyun Kurtlu, the research will utilize chemical foaming technology and basalt fiber reinforcement to ensure high durability and heat resistance. The materials will be developed at the university and subsequently produced by EPSAN Plastik, meeting international automotive standards.
