Bursa Technical University hosts earthquake safety panel
Bursa Technical University (BTÜ) hosted the ‘August 17 Earthquake Panel’ to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the 1999 Marmara earthquake. The event brought together representatives from academia, government, and civil society to discuss earthquake risks and structural safety.
BTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Naci Çağlar emphasized that while the reality of earthquakes cannot be changed, the focus must remain on constructing earthquake-resistant buildings to ensure people are protected within safe structures.
AFAD Bursa Provincial Director Mehmet Buldan stated that disaster management in the region involves more than just immediate response, covering risk reduction and recovery. He noted that the second five-year planning period for the Bursa Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan has commenced, with specific actions to be determined by the end of the year.
Additionally, BTÜ-DEPAR Director Prof. Dr. Eyübhan Avcı presented research on how soil characteristics influence damage formation during seismic events, citing observations from the 1999 Marmara earthquake.
