Bursa Technical University launches urban literacy project for individuals with disabilities

Bursa Technical University (BTÜ) has launched a new educational project titled ‘Urban Literacy and Safe Spatial Communication Training for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities’. Supported by the TÜBİTAK 4008 program for inclusive society applications, the initiative aims to help individuals with special needs navigate urban environments more independently and safely.

The project focuses on practical daily life skills, including wayfinding, recognizing maps and symbols, safe pedestrian behavior, using public transportation, and learning how to ask for assistance when needed. To ensure effective learning, the training will move beyond theoretical classroom instruction; participants will first learn in controlled environments before applying their skills in real-world urban settings using tools such as route cards, visual symbols, and pictograms.
