Bursa's DOA Deposit Return Points Drive Recycling and Citizen Earnings

Turkey’s DOA deposit‑return system, launched nationwide on 1 July, operates in Bursa through machines placed in shopping centres, major supermarkets and public transport hubs. Each eligible plastic, glass or aluminium beverage container bearing the DOA logo and an intact barcode can be inserted into a machine for a one‑lira (≈$0.05) refund.

The programme quickly attracted large crowds; residents queue at the machines, reporting “significant earnings” from daily deposits. By early July, more than 7.6 million containers had been returned and over one million citizens registered as users. Officials estimate the scheme could add about 30 billion lira to the economy while reducing waste and raising public awareness of recycling. The system also offers an online locator to help citizens find the nearest active machine.

Participation requires the DOA logo on the container and that the packaging remain undamaged. The initiative is part of a broader effort to curb litter and promote a circular economy in Turkey.
