Burundi agrees to accept third-country deportees from the United States

Burundi has agreed to accept migrants deported from the United States under the Trump administration’s third-country deportation policy. Presidential spokesperson Nancy Ninette Mutoni announced that the agreement is conditional: Burundi will only accept individuals who have no criminal records and no links to terrorism.

While specific details regarding the number of deportees, financial terms, and arrival timelines have not been disclosed, Burundian officials stated that preparations are underway to manage housing, food, and community integration. Mutoni noted that those who successfully integrate and contribute to national development may eventually be eligible for citizenship under existing laws.

The policy has faced significant criticism from human rights organizations and Senate Democrats, who argue that these opaque deals allow the U.S. to circumvent legal protections granted by immigration courts. The U.S. Supreme Court recently allowed the administration to temporarily resume such deportations while legal challenges continue. Burundi joins several other African nations that have entered similar agreements to receive deportees from countries where they have no prior connection.
