Burundi and Vietnam deepen political and economic cooperation

During an official visit to Hanoi from July 27‑31, 2026, CNDD‑FDD Secretary‑General Révérien Ndikuriyo met with Vietnamese leaders, including Tran Cam Tu and Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung. The parties signed a protocol of understanding to strengthen ties between the ruling parties of Burundi and Vietnam and to expand cooperation in investment, telecommunications, agriculture and energy.

The agreement builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier and calls for increased delegation exchanges, personnel training and joint projects such as the Lumitel telecom venture operated by Vietnam’s Viettel Group in Burundi. Ndikuriyo congratulated President Évariste Ndayishimiye on his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election and highlighted Burundi’s aspirations toward high‑income status by 2060, while Vietnamese officials urged continued support for Vietnamese firms operating in Burundi.
