Burundi Catholic Church prays for peace ahead of elections

The Catholic Church in Burundi celebrated the Feast of the Assumption on August 15, 2026, at the Mugera Marian Sanctuary in the Archdiocese of Gitega. During a solemn mass led by Archbishop Bonaventure Nahimana, the clergy and faithful recommitted the nation and its leaders to the Virgin Mary.

Archbishop Nahimana invoked the Virgin Mary as the ‘Queen of Peace,’ praying for the guidance of both high-ranking officials and ordinary citizens. With Burundi approaching upcoming presidential elections, the Archbishop urged the Christian community to pray for a peaceful and secure electoral process to support national reconciliation and stability.
