Burundi to host migrants expelled from the United States
The government of Burundi has confirmed its readiness to host migrants being expelled from the United States to a third country. Presidential spokesperson Nancy Ninette Mutoni announced that preparations are underway regarding reception sites, livelihoods, and integration processes to ensure peaceful cohabitation with local populations.
President Évariste Ndayishimiye has previously indicated support for this arrangement, which aims to strengthen diplomatic ties with Washington. The Burundian authorities specified that the country will only accept individuals who have no criminal record and no links to terrorism. Those wishing to integrate and contribute to the country's development may apply for Burundian nationality, subject to existing laws.
Burundi joins approximately fifteen other Sub-Saharan African nations that have entered into similar third-country expulsion agreements with the United States. This move is framed by the Burundian government as an extension of the nation's tradition of hospitality.
