Burundi trade unions warn of economic crisis amid fuel shortages

Burundi’s two major trade union confederations, COSYBU and CSB, have issued a joint warning regarding the country’s deteriorating socio-economic conditions. The unions expressed deep concern over a persistent fuel shortage and a series of fires that have destroyed markets and commercial premises across the nation.

The fuel shortage has caused significant disruptions to the transport of people and goods, leading to increased transportation costs and higher prices for various goods and services. These factors have contributed to a worsening cost of living and a reduction in purchasing power for workers and households. The unions noted that worker incomes have not kept pace with these rising costs, which threatens efforts to improve living and working conditions.

To address these challenges, the confederations are calling for the establishment of an inclusive and permanent national social dialogue. They urge public authorities, civil society, and other stakeholders to collaborate on immediate and long-term solutions to mitigate the effects of the fuel shortage and prevent future crises.
