Bus driver shortage affects 222 Polish counties

Poland is facing a significant shortage of bus and coach drivers, with a deficit projected in 222 counties according to the Barometr Zawodów. The shortage affects municipal, regional, and international transport services.

Several factors contribute to the labor gap. Many experienced drivers are approaching retirement age, with the average age of a bus driver exceeding 50 years. Additionally, 42 percent of the deficit is attributed to candidates lacking the necessary professional qualifications, such as Category D licenses. The nature of the work, including irregular hours, weekend shifts, and high responsibility for passenger safety, also acts as a deterrent.

To combat the shortage, carriers are increasing wages. While the median gross monthly salary is approximately 6,410 PLN, some offers in major cities reach up to 9,200 PLN net. Some companies are also offering to finance driving courses to attract new talent.
