Bus Fire on Indonesia's Nganjuk-Madiun Toll Road Leaves Vehicle in Rubble

A Volvo double‑decker bus operated by Gunung Harta caught fire on the Nganjuk‑Madiun toll road (KM 631) on the night of 1 August 2026. The vehicle, bearing police plate B 7572 KGA, was travelling from Jakarta to Jember with 30 passengers, two drivers and a conductor, a total of 33 people on board. Driver Purwanto (61) reported that the main lights failed, prompting him to pull over and inspect the fuse box, when sparks ignited a blaze.

Firefighters from the districts of Nganjuk and Madiun, together with police road patrols and toll staff, fought the fire for about two hours before it was extinguished. No injuries were reported, but the bus was reduced to its frame, and material losses were estimated in the billions of rupiah. Preliminary investigations point to an electrical short circuit as the likely cause.
