Busan achieves first shipment of Atlantic salmon from smart aquaculture cluster

Busan has achieved the first production and shipment of Atlantic salmon from one of South Korea's six smart aquaculture clusters. The salmon was produced at the Busan Smart Aquaculture Cluster testbed located within the Pukyong National University Fisheries Science Research Institute in Gijang-gun.

The project involved a total investment of 40 billion won from national, municipal, and private funds. It utilizes advanced technologies, including a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) that enables eco-friendly land-based farming. This milestone marks the first instance among the nation's ongoing smart aquaculture cluster projects where the process has successfully moved from production to actual shipment.

Local authorities aim to use this achievement to promote the industrialization of smart aquaculture technology and establish Busan as a central hub for the industry. By expanding the domestic production base for Atlantic salmon, the city hopes to reduce reliance on imports and diversify the national seafood supply chain with high-quality, safely managed products.
