Busan shark Bukangi draws 600,000 visitors to North Port canal

A 3.5-meter shark, nicknamed ‘Bukangi’, has become a major tourist attraction in Busan, South Korea, after becoming trapped in a narrow canal at the North Port Waterfront Park. Since its discovery on September 18, an estimated 600,000 people have visited the area to catch a glimpse of the animal, which experts believe is a bronze whaler. The sudden influx of visitors has provided a significant boost to the local economy, with nearby businesses reporting increased sales.

Authorities have made several attempts to guide the shark back to the open ocean. An initial operation involving five vessels and water jets failed as the shark successfully evaded the streams. Due to concerns regarding the animal's health and orientation in the shallow canal, officials are planning a second attempt using a specially designed large net to channel the shark toward the exit.

In recognition of its popularity, Busan city officials have named the shark an honorary public relations ambassador, following a public poll that saw 91 percent approval. While the shark has become a local celebrity, some experts note that the increasing frequency of large shark sightings in South Korean waters may be linked to rising sea temperatures caused by climate change.
