Busan hosts K-seafood pop-up to promote domestic bluefin tuna

Busan Metropolitan City is hosting a ‘K-Seafood Win-Win Pop-up’ event at the Hyundai Department Store in Pangyo from September 26 to October 1. The event aims to promote high-quality domestic bluefin tuna and mackerel to consumers in the Seoul metropolitan area.

The initiative is part of a pilot project designed to increase the income potential of domestic bluefin tuna. By facilitating direct transactions between large-scale purse seine fleets and domestic processing companies, the project seeks to improve freshness, quality, and added value. This framework was established following administrative support from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Busan City, alongside a business agreement between Dongwon Industries and the Large-scale Purse Seine Fisheries Cooperative.

Highlights of the pop-up include daily bluefin tuna butchering shows, where tuna weighing over 100kg caught in domestic waters will be processed on-site for limited sale. Additionally, the event will feature modern interpretations of mackerel, such as mackerel pressed sushi and mackerel pot rice, to appeal to younger consumers.
