Busan implements educational initiatives for regional growth and learner support

Busan authorities are implementing various educational initiatives to address demographic shifts and support specific learner needs. The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education and Busan Metropolitan City are jointly applying for the Ministry of Education’s ‘2026 Educational Innovation Leading Region’ project. This initiative aims to combat regional extinction and declining school-age populations by creating customized educational models. If selected under the ‘Non-metropolitan Metropolitan City Type 2’ category, the region could receive up to 4 billion won in special grants annually for five years.

Separately, the Nam-gu District Office in Busan has announced an empathy education program for parents and caregivers of individuals with borderline intelligence. Scheduled for September 12 at the Nam-gu Lifelong Learning Center, the session features special education teacher Lee Bo-ram. The program is designed to help caregivers understand the unique characteristics of children with borderline intelligence and provide guidance on career development and independence. This follows the enactment of a related ordinance in 2024 aimed at supporting this demographic through tailored lifelong education programs.
