Busan International Buddhist Expo Opens with Interactive “Empty” Theme

The third Busan International Buddhist Expo opened at BEXCO in Busan from June 6‑9, featuring the theme “색즉시공, 당신이 좋아하는 놀이” – a modern, playful reinterpretation of the Buddhist concept of emptiness (공). Exhibits and activities included meditation, temple cuisine, traditional crafts, design, and a range of participatory programs such as “공 뽑기,” a “공 수거 프로젝트,” and a “행운의 전당” showcase.

Organisers highlighted the event’s aim to bring Buddhist philosophy into everyday life and attract both domestic visitors and foreign tourists. The expo offered English, Japanese and Chinese promotional materials and free tickets, and was endorsed by Wonho monk, the event’s host, and Busan Mayor Jeon Jae‑su, who called it a cultural bridge that modernises traditional heritage.
