Busan International Film Festival opens with A-list status and Oscar eligibility

The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has officially opened in South Korea, running from October 6 to October 15, 2026. This edition marks a significant milestone as the festival has been recognized as an 'A-list' event by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), joining the ranks of prestigious festivals like Cannes and Venice.

Furthermore, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has included BIFF in a select group of six festivals whose top winners are eligible for consideration for the Best International Feature Film Oscar. The festival's competition section, led by jury president Zhang Yimou, will feature 14 films from various nations, including South Korea, Japan, China, and Indonesia.

The program is extensive, showcasing 247 films from 59 countries, with 95 films making their world premieres. Notable attendees and participants include Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who presented his film 'Look Back,' and Chinese actress Pan Bingbing, who discussed the limitations of AI in acting. Other scheduled honorees include Michelle Yeoh and director Ann Hui.
