Busan's Bukhang Park sees 100,000 visitors to see shark
An estimated 102,000 people visited the Bukhang Waterfront Park in Busan during the first day of the Chuseok holiday to catch a glimpse of a shark nicknamed ‘Bukangi’. The shark, which may be a bull shark or blacktip shark, was first spotted in the park's artificial waterway on September 18 and has remained there for several days.
The sudden influx of visitors represents a 50-fold increase compared to typical holiday crowds. The phenomenon has boosted local businesses, including cafes and convenience stores, and prompted local authorities to consider creating shark-themed souvenirs and characters.
To manage the crowds and ensure safety, Busan Metropolitan City issued guidance advising visitors to use public transportation due to severe traffic congestion. Authorities have also implemented nighttime access restrictions to the waterway and deployed emergency personnel, police, and coast guard patrols to prevent accidents and discourage improper behavior, such as visitors throwing food into the water.
