IPS officer Bushra Bano transferred following religious greeting controversy
IPS officer Bushra Bano has been transferred from her post as Additional Superintendent of Police in Kharagpur, West Bengal, following a controversy regarding her use of Islamic greetings in a social media video.
In the video, which was intended to motivate UPSC aspirants by sharing her journey from Aligarh Muslim University to the civil services, Bano used expressions such as ‘Assalamualaikum’, ‘Inshallah’, and ‘Jazakallah’. This prompted a complaint from the Hindu Legal Fund to the West Bengal Home Secretary, arguing that a government officer should maintain neutrality and use national expressions like ‘Vande Mataram’ or ‘Jai Hind’ instead.
Following the complaint, the state government transferred Bano to the position of Deputy Commandant of the State Armed Police 4th Battalion, citing ‘public interest’. The move has drawn sharp criticism from political leaders, including Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who accused the government of sidelining a Muslim woman officer. Other leaders, including Telangana Minister Mohammed Azharuddin, have also expressed concern over the implications of targeting public servants based on religious greetings.
