Business continuity planning urged to counter digital risks
Experts are urging businesses to develop robust 'Day X' contingency plans to ensure operational continuity in the event of sudden critical system failures. Such disruptions can stem from cyberattacks, power outages, internet connectivity loss, or cloud service interruptions, potentially halting business operations within minutes.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NKSC) has noted a rapid increase in registered software vulnerabilities. Advancements in artificial intelligence are enabling these flaws to be identified and exploited more quickly through automation. To mitigate these risks, the NKSC recommends continuous infrastructure monitoring, timely security updates, the removal of unsupported software, and the implementation of multi-factor authentication (MFA).
IT professionals emphasize that a continuity plan must be more than a reactive document. Effective strategies involve identifying core business risks, maintaining an updated inventory of critical digital resources, and establishing clear alternative procedures for when primary protections fail.
