Business experts urge formal succession planning for family enterprises
At the Business Summit 2026 in Lagos, industry leaders and experts advised owners of family-owned enterprises to implement robust governance frameworks and formal succession plans. The panelists warned that many businesses face terminal risks when they fail to transition from founder-centric models to institutionalized management, a phenomenon described as “founder dependency.”
To ensure longevity, experts suggested adopting professional management practices, such as establishing boards of directors and defining clear roles for family members. Effective succession was characterized as a continuous process of investing in next-generation leadership rather than a single event.
Data highlights the scale of the challenge, with studies indicating that only 30% of family businesses successfully transition to the second generation, and only 3% survive into the fourth generation or beyond. Successful transitions typically require addressing three core areas: financial preparedness, operational preparedness, and emotional preparedness.
