Business Management: Applying PDCA and KPI in Logistics
The articles discuss the application of the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) cycle within business management and logistics.
In business administration, the PDCA cycle is a fundamental method for continuous improvement. A common pitfall in corporate environments is failing to distinguish between the ‘Check’ (evaluation) and ‘Act’ (improvement) phases, or failing to use the results of one cycle to inform the planning of the next. Effective management requires that the ‘Plan’ phase is a direct refinement of the previous cycle's findings rather than a completely disconnected new plan.
In the context of logistics and supply chain management, the PDCA cycle is utilized to manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Companies select specific KPIs based on their primary strategic goals, such as increasing sales, reducing costs, optimizing assets, or fostering business growth. For example, sales-focused goals may prioritize delivery lead times and stockout rates, while cost-reduction goals focus on error rates in shipping and receiving. Because different departments within the same company may have conflicting objectives—such as sales prioritizing high inventory to prevent stockouts while logistics prioritizes low inventory to reduce costs—the selection of KPIs must be carefully aligned with specific organizational or departmental targets.
