Los Angeles Lakers face $12.5 billion sale amid Buss family dispute

The Los Angeles Lakers are undergoing a major ownership transition, with majority owner Mark Walter set to sell his stake to a group led by Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner. The transaction values the franchise at a record $12.5 billion, the highest ever for an American sports team.

However, the sale has triggered significant internal conflict within the Buss family. While five of the six Buss siblings have voted to sell their remaining 17.8% stake, Jeanie Buss, the current team governor, is contesting the decision. Her legal team argues that the family trust lacks the authority to negotiate the sale. Jeanie Buss faces the possibility of losing her governor role if the sale proceeds, as NBA rules require a minimum 15% ownership stake to hold the position.

Amidst this dispute, minority shareholder Patrick Soon-Shiong has confirmed he has no intention of selling his 4% stake in the team. He expressed support for the incoming Iger and Kushner group, stating he looks forward to being an active partner in the franchise's future.
