Busways pilots Auslan training to improve passenger communication
Busways is piloting the ‘Signs of Welcome’ program, providing introductory Auslan training to employees to improve communication with Deaf passengers. The initiative, part of the company’s Accessible Transport Action Plan, includes staff such as driver trainers, customer support, and service promoters.
Participants are learning basic signs for everyday interactions, including “hello”, “help”, “yes”, “no”, and “thank you”. The pilot aims to inform future training for bus drivers and other customer-facing staff to ensure passengers feel understood during transit. This follows the company’s 2024 introduction of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative.
