Busy Philipps reveals diagnosis and surgery for rare brain tumor
Actress Busy Philipps has revealed that she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor, a discovery made during a full-body MRI scan in February 2026. The scan was performed the day after the death of her former 'Dawson’s Creek' co-star, James Van Der Beek.
Philipps, 47, was diagnosed with a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare and slow-growing tumor measuring approximately 2.6 centimeters in the frontal lobe. Despite having no prior symptoms, the scan identified the lesion. She underwent a five-hour surgery on March 2 to remove the tumor, which successfully avoided the need for chemotherapy or radiation. However, she required a second surgery in April to treat a staph infection at the incision site.
Philipps noted that she initially hesitated to undergo the screening, but was encouraged by her ex-husband, Marc Silverstein, to proceed. She expressed gratitude for the early detection, stating she is 'grateful to be alive.'
