Butch Huskey, former New York Mets outfielder, dies at 54

Former New York Mets outfielder Butch Huskey has died at the age of 54. According to Mets vice president of alumni relations Jay Horwitz, Huskey passed away due to a blood clot in his lung.

Emergency services were called to Huskey’s residence in Lawton, Oklahoma, on Friday morning following reports of chest pain. While he was alive when transported to a nearby hospital, he ultimately succumbed to the condition. Mets interim manager Andy Green expressed condolences, stating that the Mets family is thinking of Huskey and his family.

Huskey was selected by the Mets in the seventh round of the 1989 MLB Draft and made his major league debut in 1993. During his five seasons with the Mets, he hit 55 home runs and drove in 214 runs. He later played for the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, and Colorado Rockies. He is notably remembered for wearing number 42 during the period when Major League Baseball retired Jackie Robinson’s number across the league.

Huskey is survived by his wife and three children.
