Butrint Acropolis begins first-ever excavations of defensive walls
Archaeological excavations have commenced at the Acropolis of Butrint to study the city's defensive walls for the first time in the site's scientific history. Part of the “Urban Topography of Butrint in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages” project, the research is led by the Institute of Archaeology and supported by the Butrint Management Foundation.
Architect Dr. Nevila Molla stated the project aims to identify construction phases of the Acropolis walls and clarify the topographical organization of both the upper and lower city. Current work is focused on a fortification tower, where archaeological layers from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages have been identified. These findings are expected to clarify urban changes between the 5th and 15th centuries.
In addition to these scientific efforts, the mosaics of Butrint serve as a significant cultural inspiration for local artisans. Craftsmen are translating ancient symbols and figures into various handmade goods, including ceramics, stone carvings, and decorative items, to preserve the site's history through local commerce.
