Butterfield Bank warns of vishing and fraudulent support scams

Butterfield Bank has issued warnings to clients and businesses regarding sophisticated vishing (voice phishing) attempts. Scammers are impersonating bank staff by using the bank’s legitimate Bermuda hotline, 295-1111, to make calls appear authentic.

According to reports, fraudsters claim to be investigating suspicious international payment activity. To build credibility, they use actual customer account information and fabricated fraud case reference numbers. Victims are directed to fraudulent websites, such as butterfieldcontact.web.app and butterfieldhelpdesk.web.app, which have since been taken down. Once on these sites, individuals are often instructed to engage in live support chats or install remote access software, such as AnyDesk.

These tactics are used to facilitate unauthorized wire transfers or to convince victims to move funds into purported “safe accounts.” The bank and police advise customers to never disclose sensitive credentials, PINs, or OTP security codes, and to immediately hang up and verify any suspicious requests through official, trusted channels.
