Buxton beach nourishment project completed
The 2026 Buxton beach nourishment project has been completed by the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company. Over a period of 69 days, approximately 1.9 million cubic yards of sand were placed along the shoreline to protect infrastructure and N.C. Highway 12.
Work concluded earlier than anticipated due to the incidental take of seven sea turtles, which reached the limit established by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ special use permit. This decision was made in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. While the northern taper was not nourished as planned, the project provides increased protection for the area. Native dune grasses are scheduled for installation in November to support the long-term development of the restored beach and dune system.
