Buzău Research Station introduces ‘Victor’ Mexican cucumber variety
Researchers at the Buzău Vegetable Research and Development Station have introduced the ‘Victor’ Mexican cucumber, a variety officially registered in Romania in 2022. Known as a ‘cucamelon,’ the plant produces small, green fruits that resemble miniature watermelons, typically measuring about three centimeters in length and weighing approximately 3.5 grams.
The fruit features a crunchy texture and a flavor profile similar to a standard cucumber but with a subtle, slightly tart citrus note. According to researcher Olivia Agape, the fruits are suitable for fresh consumption in salads and appetizers, or for preservation in vinegar or brine for pickling, as they maintain a firm texture.
While the variety is being promoted to gardeners, the research station intends to offer seedlings for sale starting in the spring of 2027 at a price of 2.5 lei per unit. The plants are currently cultivated in greenhouses for research purposes.
